NEW YORK — Alter Trading Corp. has appointed Jay Robinovitz as its new president and chief operating officer effective Jan. 1.

Robinovitz will replace Robert S. Goldstein, who has been the metals recycling company’s president since 1989.

Goldstein will continue to serve as chairman and chief executive officer, positions he has held since 2003.

Robinovitz joined Alter Trading as its senior vice president and chief officer of operations in September 2009. He has been in the industry for more 30 years, previously serving in various capacities at Portland, Ore.-based Schnitzer Steel Industries Inc.

St. Louis-based Alter Trading operates 43 metals recycling facilities and five trading offices in the United States.

In the past few months, the company has ramped up its business offerings by buying out Milwaukee-based recycler Miller Compressing Co. (, Sept. 28) and expanding in Illinois (, Dec. 4).
