NEW YORK — Reliance Steel & Aluminum Co. is scaling back operations at its Chatham Steel Corp. division’s Ohio facility.

Chatham Steel’s distribution center in South Point, Ohio, will be wound down and used instead as a stocking and transfer station, a spokeswoman for Los Angeles-based Reliance said, citing "business conditions" as the driver behind the decision.

About 20 of the 25 employees at the South Port facility will be laid off, according to Chatham Steel president Bert Tenenbaum, who said in an e-mail statement that the facility will be closed for business Jan. 11. "Most customers will continue to be served by our Durham, N.C., location, as they were prior to us opening our Ohio location," he added.

Savannah, Ga.-based service center and processor Chatham Steel carries structural shapes, plate and sheet, hot- and cold-rolled bar, pipe and tube, and stainless steel and alloy products, according to its website.
