NEW YORK Steel Parts Manufacturing Inc. has told the state of Indiana that it expects to close its Tipton, Ind., facility and lay off all the workers.
The shutdown would affect employees at every job level and would be permanent, Tipton-based Steel Parts said in a Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act notice to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.
The company said it has offered to negotiate with United Steelworkers union Local 3875 to avert a plant closure.
A source at the company told AMM that talks were progressing. "The union and the company are talking and trying to come to a mutual agreement," he said.
Neither the company nor the union could be reached for further comment.
If negotiations fail, the plant will close between Feb. 28 and March 14, Steel Parts said.
