NEW YORK — Discussions between Alcoa Inc. and the United Steelworkers union have continued into 2013 as both parties attempt to hash out a new agreement to cover some 900 workers at the Pittsburgh producer’s Aluminerie de Bécancour (ABI) smelter in Quebec.

“I can confirm negotiations are ongoing,” an Alcoa spokeswoman said, declining to comment further.

Union representatives did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

Talks began on Sept. 11, with the original contract set to expire on Nov. 22 (, Nov. 26).

Domestic billet producers and consumers continue to await the outcome of the talks with great interest, as any curtailment of capacity at the 400,000-tonne-per-year smelter could tighten supply and push billet spot premiums north.
