NEW YORK — Carpenter Technology Corp. has hired former Alcoa Inc. executive Tony Thene to replace Douglas Ralph as senior vice president and chief financial officer effective Jan. 31.

Thene spent 23 years with Pittsburgh-based Alcoa, most recently as chief financial officer for its engineered products and solutions business, according to the company.

“(Thene) has significant mergers, acquisitions and joint-venture experience, plus process industry experience, having spent the vast majority of his professional life at a global, publicly traded metals company,” Carpenter said.

Ralph announced his retirement in September ( amm.com, Sept. 7); a company spokesman confirmed that Ralph will stay on in an advisory capacity until August.

In other news, Andrew Ziolkowski has been tapped as Wyomissing, Pa.-based Carpenter’s senior vice president for commercial specialty alloy operations and Latrobe operations effective immediately, according to the spokesman. Ziolkowski replaces Mark Kamon, who announced his retirement in November ( amm.com, Nov. 28).

Ziolkowski’s promotion follows a special assignment as head of integration and operations of Latrobe Specialty Metals Inc., Latrobe, Pa., which was acquired by Carpenter last February, according to the company.

“In his new role, Ziolkowski will be responsible for the overall commercial efforts of Carpenter (specialty alloy operations), including international sales as well as the distribution operations of Aceros Fortuna and Grupo,” the company said. He will also complete the integration of Latrobe, according to the company.

Prior to his most recent post as senior vice president for Latrobe operations, Ziolkowski held the positions of vice president for bar and coil products and vice president for strip products, according to the company.
