Chinese alumina imports surge

SHANGHAI — China’s imports of alumina and copper scrap rose last year, with alumina more than doubling to 5.02 million tonnes while copper scrap gained 3.7 percent from 2011 to 4.86 million tonnes, customs data show.

Alumina imports rose 27 percent in December to 390,000 tonnes, but copper scrap fell 6.4 percent from November to 440,000 tonnes.

Unwrought copper and copper fabricated product imports fell 6.6 percent in December to 341,211 tonnes, but full-year imports of 4.65 million tonnes were up 14.1 percent compared with 2011.
