CHICAGO Tenaris Algoma Tubes is implementing a "temporary reduction" of 83 hourly workers beginning Jan. 14.
The Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, seamless energy tubulars producer, a division of Luxembourg-based steelmaker Tenaris SA, said the cuts were due to a "trend of reduced market activity," and the company is therefore looking to align production with demand.
"Although we have not lost any customers ... their demand for product has decreased and they are working off their inventories," a spokesman said, noting that the cyclical nature of the energy industry also influences demand.
About 700 people are employed at Tenaris Algoma Tubes.
