Ducommun boosts titanium role in A380 program

LOS ANGELES — Ducommun Inc. has entered a four-year contract to perform chemical milling services on the titanium fan blades for the Airbus A380’s engine.

Carson, Calif.-based Ducommun’s AeroStructures facility in El Mirage, Calif., will chemically mill turbine blades for engine components manufacturer TECT Power, a unit of Asheville, N.C.-based TECT Corp. The contract, which runs through 2016, has a potential value of $6 million, Ducommun said.

The blades are used on Engine Alliance LLC’s GP7200 engines, which power Toulouse, France-based Airbus SAS’ A380 airliner. Engine Alliance is a joint venture between United Technologies Corp.’s Pratt & Whitney unit and General Electric Co.’s GE Aviation unit.

The agreement with TECT Power "represents new growth for Ducommun" as a supplier of critical rotating components and assemblies for turbine engines, Ducommun chairman, president and chief executive officer Anthony J. Reardon said in a statement.

Chemical milling is typically used to help maintain the strength of contoured parts while reducing weight. In addition to titanium, Ducommun AeroStructures chemically mills aluminum and steel parts for the A380 program, the company said.

The GP7200 is one of two engines being used in the A380. The other is the Trent 900 by British engine builder Rolls Royce Ltd.
