NEW YORK — More than $225,000 worth of nickel bricks were stolen from the Portage, Ind., facility of industrial equipment supplier Ryan Industries Inc.

Thieves took 12 containers of about 2,000 pounds each on the night of Jan. 18, according to the Portage Police Department.

Ryan Industries owner John Brunker told investigators that the thieves gained access to the property by cutting a chain securing an exterior fence. However, police found "no signs of forced entry into the shop anywhere."

Surveillance footage also suggested the thieves used a forklift located on the property to steal the metal.

"After further speaking with Mr. Brunker, he made it clear that he suspects either current or ex-employees as the suspects for the burglary," according to the police report.

While the police report listed ISA Sales & Service LLC as the victim of the theft, a source at the company told AMM that the two companies share a property; ISA Sales was listed on the report because its employees reported the theft.

Brunker did not respond to requests for comment.
