Zinc smelter output falls 14.9% year on year in Oct.: USGS

NEW YORK — Domestic zinc smelter production totaled 20,000 tonnes in October, down 14.9 percent from 23,500 tonnes the same month a year earlier, according to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data.

U.S. zinc output from January through October totaled 213,000 tonnes vs. 248,000 tonnes for all of 2011.

Refined zinc imports through the first 10 months of 2012 were 545,000 tonnes after reaching 716,000 tonnes for 2011 as a whole.

Canada was the top supplier of refined zinc to the U.S. market, at 384,000 tonnes, in January-to-October 2012. Mexico was second, at 79,100 tonnes, while some 48,000 tonnes arrived from Peru.
