U.S. raw steel output totaled an estimated 1,806,000 net tons
last week, down 1 percent from 1,824,000 tons the previous
week, as mills operated at an average capability utilization
rate of 75.4 percent.
In the corresponding week last
year, mills produced 1,918,000 tons at an average capability
utilization rate of 77.6 percent, according to the American
Iron and Steel Institute, Washington.
Mills have produced 7,205,000
tons so far this year at an average capability utilization rate
of 75 percent, down 5.9 percent from the same period last year,
when mills produced 7,657,000 tons at an average capability
utilization rate of 77.6 percent.
The capability utilization figures for 2013 reflect a change
in the overall capacity of the market due to the closure of
several steelmaking facilities in 2012, new facilities coming
online and improvements made at existing facilities to increase
their capability, the AISI said.
