NEW YORK — Carpenter Technology Corp. and U.S. Steel Corp. have finalized a formal cooperation agreement to develop a new "lightweighting" steel alloy for automotive applications.

Wyomissing, Pa.-based Carpenter said its Temper Tough specialized steel alloy could help automotive manufacturers meet Corporate Average Fuel Economy (Cafe) standards "by lightweighting vehicles through mass reduction."

The alloy is designed for use in flat-rolled automotive applications, although it was originally designed for the aerospace industry, Carpenter said.

Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel will develop the grade through its operational footprint.
