Bekaert to expand Van Buren facility

NEW YORK — Global steel wire fabricator N.V. Bekaert SA is expanding its Van Buren, Ark., steel wire fabricating facility to produce galvanized prestressed concrete strand, the first operation of its kind in the United States, a source at the company told AMM.

The Kortrijk, Belgium-based company is installing a seven wire strand machine, a "major step forward" in supplying end markets that previously relied on imported galvanized PC strand or non-stressed strand, the source said. "It is the first and only (galvanized) PC operation in the U.S."

The new offering is expected to be available in the second quarter for the construction and transportation end markets in the United States.

Bekaert’s Arkansas expansion could give the company new market share ahead of a possible U.S. federal infrastructure investment (, Feb. 21), Bekaert said. The Buy America Act requires suppliers to public infrastructure projects to use domestically produced material, and the Van Buren expansion would capitalize on the potential new market.

The company declined to comment on the size of the facility or the volume of wire that will be produced.
