CHICAGO — Novelis Inc.’s Oswego, N.Y., aluminum complex has resumed standard operations after a basement fire halted production at one of the facility’s rolling mills.

The hot mill at the Oswego Works restarted production on the evening of Feb. 14, five days after the fire, a spokesman for the Atlanta-based aluminum producer told AMM in a Feb. 27 e-mail.

Novelis continues to investigate the cause of the blaze, the spokesman said, and the cost of the fire to the company—including repairs to hot-mill equipment, wiring and piping systems—is “unknown at this time.”

Novelis’ Oswego facility includes two cold-rolling mills as well as two rolling mills within its hot mill, in addition to remelting, casting and finishing capabilities. The impacted rolling mill was located within the hot mill (, Feb. 14).
