NEW YORK — Severstal North America Inc. has been named one of United Metallurgical Co.’s (OMK’s) domestic suppliers of hot-rolled coil for its recently launched oil country tubular goods (OCTG) facility near Houston.

"We’re probably a bigger supplier; I don’t know if we’re a main supplier. They’re a very good customer to work with and we’re really excited about them being part of the OCTG market down here," Thomas M. Marchak, vice president of commercial for the Dearborn, Mich.-based steelmaker, told AMM.

The $100-million electric-resistance weld (ERW) mill is set to make 100,000 tonnes of OCTG this year. OMK president Vladimir Markin told AMM that the Russian pipe and tube maker would look to source coil primarily from local producers (, Feb. 27).

OMK’s new facility "is very impressive, state-of-the-art. They have a great reputation on a global basis," Marchak said.

Severstal also is looking to build its presence in the tube and pipe market, a strategy outlined at AMM’s fifth annual Steel Tube and Pipe Conference in Houston last month (, Feb. 8).

"We do have a strategy that specifically targets the energy market and the pipe and tube market," Marchak said, adding that the company also has customers in a number of other pipe and tube segments beside OCTG.

OMK did not return a request for comment.
