MEXICO CITY Alonso Ancira Elizondo has been re-elected as president of Mexican steel association Canacero for the 2013-14 term.
"Mexico cannot move on without reacting to phenomena like the economic tsunami generated by the economic crisis in Europe and the slower growth in Asia, which has resulted in illegal trade practices," Elizondo said in a meeting with legislators.
Mexican steelmakers will ask authorities to modernize trade rules so that the country can to respond to the global economys challenges, he said.
As an immediate measure, Elizondo has asked to the Mexican government to strengthen the Secretariat of the Economys international trade practices unit, also noting that works carried out in the country "should have a minimum local content of 60 percent," similar to that in the United States.
Elizondo is president of Monclova-based integrated steelmaker Altos Hornos de Mexico SAB de CV (Ahmsa).
