LOS ANGELES — California structural steel fabricator SOS Steel Co. Inc. is confident it will reach a settlement in a lawsuit filed earlier this month by an San Francisco environmental group, company president Steve Boucher said.

San Francisco Baykeeper, in a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in San Jose, Calif., in mid-March (, March 22), alleged that SOS Steel discharged stormwater into a tributary of San Francisco Bay in violation of the U.S. Clean Water Act and the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System.

Boucher has met with members of San Francisco Baykeeper and said he is optimistic that the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company can resolve the charges. "We feel we can accommodate the requirement, which is to keep contamination out of the Bay," he said, noting that after the filing he invited representatives of the nonprofit group to the company’s facility and brought SOS Steel’s environmental consultant to the site, he said.

The two sides discussed what steps could be taken to keep the runoff levels of metals, such as zinc and iron, at acceptable levels. Such steps included introducing new systems for filtering rainwater and collecting samples from the drain.

"We’ve implanted these, and we’re ready to go," Boucher said, adding that he’s now waiting for the next rains to test the system.

A Baykeeper spokesman couldn’t be reached for comment.
