PITTSBURGH The Columbus (Ind.) Board of Zoning Appeals is holding a public hearing to discuss a companys request to open a recycling operation.
KLM National LLC is seeking a conditional-use permit to open a recycling center on vacant property where Golden Casting Corp. formerly operated a foundry. Columbus, Ind.-based KLM currently owns the 8.3-acre property, which is zoned for heavy industrial use.
The center would accept only metal initially, but it has a long-term plan to purchase other recyclables, including paper and plastic.
A preliminary Board of Zoning staff report recommended that no vehicles or industrial scrap metal be accepted at the site.
KLM National is owned by Larry Ellegood, who also owns an auto salvage yard in Columbus, Ind. KLM received approval to open Garden City Iron & Metal, which purchases scrap and has 500 obsolete cars in inventory, in 2012. An executive at Garden City said the company wouldnt comment on the project until after the hearing.
