NEW YORK Orbite Aluminae Inc. started shipping commercial samples of high-purity alumina (HPA) this week from its new plant in Cap-Chat, Quebec, to customers in North America, Asia and Europe, the Montreal-based company said.
The company, which produces alumina from aluminous clay rather than traditional bauxite, said it has received more than 25 confirmed orders for HPA samples from global customers looking to test the newly developed product before submitting purchase orders for commercial supply.
"This is a very important milestone for Orbite as it signals our official entry into the global high-purity alumina market," president and chief executive officer Richard Boudreault said in a statement.
Orbite Aluminae commissioned the HPA plant in February, saying at the time that it expected to begin to ship samples before the end of the first quarter (amm.com, Feb. 20).
The company is also planning to build an aluminum smelter-grade alumina plant, with a feasibility study on the project slated for completion by the end of 2013.
