Evraz shunts Brazil rail mill idea into sidings

MOSCOW — Russia’s Evraz Group SA has decided against building a rail mill in Brazil, chief executive officer Alexander Frolov said April 11.

Evraz, the largest rail producer in North America, had said last year it was mulling a rail rolling mill in Brazil, a country that depends entirely on rail imports (amm.com, Jan. 25, 2012).

Brazil hasn’t produced the product since the mid-1990s, when local steelmaker Cia. Siderúrgica Nacional SA permanently dismantled its rail mill.

“(The) rail mill plant idea has been brushed off,” Frolov said in a conference call. “We think the volume (in the) Brazilian market will not be enough to justify the construction of a mill there.”
