US raw steel output climbs to 8-month high

NEW YORK — U.S. raw steel output totaled an estimated 1,880,000 net tons last week, up 1.2 percent from 1,858,000 tons the previous week, as mills operated at an average capability utilization rate of 78.5 percent. It was the highest weekly output since 1,899,000 tons were produced in early August.

In the corresponding week last year, mills produced 2,014,000 tons at an average capability utilization rate of 80.9 percent, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute, Washington.

Mills have produced 27,321,000 tons so far this year at an average capability utilization rate of 76 percent, down 7.6 percent from the same period last year, when mills produced 29,576,000 tons at an average capability utilization rate of 79.7 percent.
