SHANGHAI Rio Tinto Plc shipped 57.3 million tonnes of iron ore from its global operations in the first quarter of 2013, down 14 percent from the final quarter of 2012, due to "seasonal weather disruptions" in Australias Pilbara region.
The figure was still a first-quarter record for the company, representing a 7-percent year-on-year increase, Rio Tinto said.
Production from global operations reached 61.2 million tonnes, down 8 percent from the fourth quarter but up 4 percent year on year.
Pilbaras output accounted for 54.7 million tonnes of Rio Tintos iron ore sales in the first quarter, down 13 percent sequentially but up 6.6 percent on an annual basis.
The Pilbara operations are running at 237 million tonnes per year and are on track to reach 290 million tonnes by the third quarter, the company said.
