NEW YORK — A labor contract between U.S. Steel Corp.’s Lake Erie Works and the United Steelworkers union has now expired as negotiations reached an "impasse," USW Local 8782 said on its website.

However, the union’s 72-hour strike notification clock "has not been started yet," it said.

The contract expired at 12:01 a.m. April 16.

The USW is planning to hold a meeting April 17 to update members on the "most current information and facts," and will "make a collective decision on how we proceed at that time," it said.

Neither union representatives nor a spokesman for the Pittsburgh-based company responded to requests for comment.
