Steel shipments drop 9.4% in February vs. January

NEW YORK — U.S. steel mill shipments totaled 7.44 million net tons in February, down 9.4 percent from 8.21 million tons in January and off 11.5 percent from nearly 8.41 million tons in February 2012, American Iron and Steel Institute data show.

Mills shipped 15.65 million tons for the first two months of the year, down 7.4 percent from 16.91 million tons a year earlier.

Major monthly changes include cold-rolled sheet and hot-dipped galvanized sheet and strip (both down 5 percent), as well as hot-rolled sheet (off 11 percent).
