NEW YORK — NLMK USA saw a pickup in flat-rolled steel sales in the first three months of the year on the back of improvements in key consuming sectors such as automotive, construction and pipe and tube, the company said April 18.

The Portage, Ind.-based steelmaker, part of Russia’s Novolipetsk Steel, reported total flat-rolled sales of 472,000 tonnes, a 15.8-percent increase from the fourth quarter and up 9 percent from the first three months of last year.

Hot-rolled steel sales totaled 274,000 tonnes, up 18.4 percent from the previous quarter and up 11.7 percent from a year earlier, while cold-rolled sales totaled 116,000 tonnes, up 12.1 percent from the fourth quarter and up 9.9 percent from the corresponding 2012 period.

Galvanized steel sales, a smaller portion of the company’s portfolio, rose 12.5 percent quarter on quarter but just 0.1 percent year on year to 82,000 tonnes.

The company produced some 170,000 tonnes of crude steel at its Indiana facility in the first quarter, down 2.7 percent from the previous quarter and off 13.4 percent from the same period in 2012.

NLMK USA is a flat steel producer with facilities in Farrell and Sharon, Pa., in addition to the Portage facility. It has a hot-rolled capacity of 2.7 million tonnes and sells into the construction, pipe and tube and machinery sectors, among others, according to its website.
