SÃO PAULO — Vale SA’s first-quarter ferroalloys output fell 69.6 percent year on year to 32,000 tonnes, partly as a result of weaker demand.

However, the first-quarter 2012 figures included output from French and Norwegian operations that Vale sold last summer (, July 11).

Vale’s first-quarter ferroalloys output included 15,200 tonnes of ferrosilicon manganese alloys, 11,200 tonnes of high-carbon manganese alloys and 5,900 tonnes of medium-carbon manganese alloys.

"In the first quarter of 2013, (Vale’s Brazilian) ferroalloys production was 45.1 percent lower than in the fourth quarter of 2012 and 34.9 percent below the same period of last year, reflecting production adjustments due to weaker demand for ferroalloys," the Rio de Janeiro-based company said.
