NEW YORK MesoCoat Inc.s recently opened pipe-coating facility in Euclid, Ohio, is developing CermaClad technology that could unlock oil and gas projects in corrosive environments now held back by a dearth of clad pipe, executives say.
"Some of (the fields) have huge flow-rates, huge reserves, and theyre locked in because of no clad," Robert Miller, chief executive officer of MesoCoats Miami-based parent company, Abakan Inc., told AMM on the sidelines of the facilitys official opening ceremony. "They (large oil and gas companies) are finding more deep reserves than ever before. The bottleneck is still what we do."
Miller said during his opening address that the companys technology has gained increased notice in the marketplace. "One of my partners met a guy who said that if you dont have access to this technology from Cleveland, youre not going to win a pipe-cladding job in the next five years," he said
The Euclid facility, which has one production line capable of making $60 million worth of clad pipe annually, will act as a template to prove that the technology is viable for 12-meter (39-foot) sections of pipe, according to Anupam Ghildyal, manager for strategy and finance. The company is in the process of building a four-line facility in Brazil and is planning a four- to eight-line facility in Indonesia.
Pipe made using MesoCoats advanced coating technology is about 80 percent cheaper than full alloy pipe, Ghildyal said, as it applies a thin coating of the expensive alloy on the inside of regular steel pipe.
"The most efficient way to make pipe for oil and gas is steel," Joe H. Payer, chief scientist at the University of Akrons National Center for Education and Research for Corrosion and Materials Performance, said during the opening ceremony. "If you can use steel pipe and coat it with a much thinner layer of the corrosion-resistant material in the middle where the corrosive fluid is, then you can win."
Another key advantage of MesoCoats technology is speed. It would take about 400 working days for 16 lines using the companys CermaClad technology to produce 155 kilometers (about 96 miles) of coated pipe compared with 20 years using coating technology widely in use today, according to CermaClad general manager Mario Medanic.
