WASHINGTON The Steel Manufacturers Association (SMA) has honored Gallatin Steel Co., Gulf States Manufacturers LLC, Nucor Corp., Steel Dynamics Inc. and Steel of West Virginia Inc. for their achievements in social responsibility and innovation.
Gallatin Steel and Steel of West Virginia jointly received the organizations highest safety award, the Don Daily SMA Achievement in Safety. Ghent, Ky.-based Gallatin was recognized for its "Children of Gallatin Steel" initiative, which promotes home and workplace safety through art and multimedia applications, while Huntington, W.Va.-based Steel of West Virginia, a subsidiary of Fort Wayne, Ind.-based Steel Dynamics, was honored for significantly improving its lost-time injury performance and safety procedures.
Starkville, Miss.-based Gulf States Manufacturers, a division of Charlotte, N.C.-based Nucor, received the SMA Achievement in Community Involvement Award for its numerous initiatives supporting the U.S. military, among other causes.
In addition, Nucors Vulcraft Alabama facility received the SMA Achievement in Environmental Stewardship and Recycling Award for its sponsorship of a recycling contest that netted more than 11,310 pounds of batteries while raising funds for local schools.
Steel Dynamics structural and rail division in Columbia City, Ind., received the SMA Achievement in Innovation Award for its design and implementation of a light system to indicate alignment to switchmen at its plant, which has improved plant safety and will prevent future accidents.
A number of other companies and divisions also were recognized April 30 for innovation, environmental stewardship and involvement in their communities. The SMA recognized companies for their safety achievements in March.
