NEW YORK — Georgia steel fabricator Impulse Manufacturing Inc. is expanding after winning a contract to supply Caterpillar Inc.’s new plant in Athens, Ga., a company spokesman told AMM.

The Dawsonville, Ga.-based steel fabricator is investing millions of dollars in new equipment and adding 150 employees over the next three years. Half of those new hires will come onboard to meet demand from Caterpillar, the company said.

"We invest a lot every year, but rather than replacing old equipment (this year), we are on a path of adding extra capacity to the plant," he said. "Caterpillar is part of that growth, but they’re not the sole (driver) of that growth."

Peoria, Ill.-based Caterpillar is hiring 1,400 new employees to operate its $200-million Athens, Ga., facility, which is expected to begin operations late this year (, Feb. 17).

Impulse fabricates a range of steel products for original equipment manufacturers and has stamping, welding and finishing capabilities, among others.

The spokesman declined to specify how much Impulse is investing in its assets as part of the contract.
