NEW YORK — Samuel, Son & Co. Ltd. has closed its acquisition of the assets of Wilkinson Steel and Metals Inc.

The acquisition substantially increases the Mississauga, Ontario-based company’s presence in the western Canadian provinces of British Columbia, Alberta and Saskatchewan. It will strengthen the company’s strategic alliances in such industries as forestry, mining and shipbuilding in British Columbia; oil, gas and mining in Alberta; and agriculture, mining and oil in Saskatchewan, president and chief executive officer Wayne Bassett said in a statement April 30.

The acquisition will add a new product line of bars and structurals to the current Samuel, Son product line in western Canada, as well as boost Samuel, Son’s market position in carbon plate and sheet.

Wilkinson Steel president Bill Hughes will now assume the role of vice president and general manager of the company as it will continue to operate as an independent division of Samuel, Son.
