NEW YORK — One worker was killed and two others injured in a May 9 accident at Southland Tube Inc.’s Birmingham, Ala., facility.

"They were using a crane to move a bundle of pipe, and apparently somehow it came loose and fell on three employees," Phillip Russell, Jefferson County deputy coroner, told AMM.

The worker who was killed was identified as Herman Johnson, 46, he said.

The two other employees did not suffer life-threatening injuries, Russell said, although local media reported May 10 that one of the two was in critical condition.

Southland Tube, which makes hollow structural sections, didn’t return a request for comment.
