NEW YORK — ArcelorMittal USA LLC has confirmed that it is on track to restart its coke operations in Monessen, Pa., in May 2014.

The Chicago-based company in September announced a $50-million capital investment project to modernize and upgrade the facility, which has been idled since May 2009 (amm.com, Sept. 17).

"The demolition of equipment that has reached the end of its useful life, including the screening station, quench tower, process vessels and piping, is complete," a spokesman told AMM sister publication Steel First May 15. "Construction is under way on the replacement of those existing structures, and engineering is in process for the associated control systems for the new replacement facilities."

The company expects to employ about 180 permanent workers at the plant once it is up and running again.
