LONDON — Tony Hayward, former chief executive officer of oil company BP Plc, has stepped in as interim chairman of Glencore Xstrata Plc following the departure of Sir John Bond.

Hayward, who left London-based BP in the wake of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill, was already a senior independent nonexecutive director on the Baar, Switzerland-based company’s board.

Bond, who reportedly no longer had the support of shareholders, announced his departure during Glencore Xstrata’s annual general meeting May 16. He had been chairman of Xstrata Plc since 2011.
