CHICAGO — ASTM International has approved a new specification for ornamental aluminum fence systems.

Approved by the group’s Committee F14 on Fences, the new standard—ASTM F2957—is designed to ensure that aluminum fences can bear "reasonable" loads and withstand the effects of corrosion and weathering over extended periods of time.

"Until ASTM F2957, all ornamental metal fence specifications pertained to steel fence systems," Larry Burkholder, F14 member and product and training manager at Bremen, Ind.-based Digger Specialties Inc., said in a statement. "The need existed for the creation of a standardized ASTM aluminum fence specification."

The standard includes specifications for residential, commercial and industrial fences.
