SINGAPORE Hong Kong Exchanges & Clearing Ltd. (HKEx) has hired Bonnie Liu as vice president for Asia commodities to grow its business in mainland China, a source familiar with the situation said.
Liu, who until recently was the head of China commodities research at Macquarie Group Ltd., is based in Hong Kong and will be in charge of London Metal Exchange marketing and business development for mainland China, the source said.
She will report to Romnesh Lamba, co-head of global markets at HKEx, the source added.
"We have hired Bonnie Liu as vice president of our Asia commodities team," an HKEx spokeswoman confirmed. "Weve been adding heads in both London and Asia for the commodities business and will continue to do so where we see a need in order to further our strategic plan."
She declined to give details about the size of the LME team in London and the Asia commodities teams in Singapore and Hong Kong.
HKEx is building an Asian commodities team with a trading hub in Hong Kong, the bourse told AMM sister publication Metal Bulletin in May. The exchange will retain its Singapore office to focus on markets in Southeast Asia, Australia and India, while its Hong Kong office focuses on North Asia and Greater China.
Last week, Martin Abbott tendered his resignation from the roles of HKEx co-head of global markets and LME chief executive officer (amm.com, June 6).
