SHANGHAI — China’s Hebei Iron & Steel Co. Ltd. stopped making HRB335 grade II rebar this month.

The National Development and Reform Commission in April ordered mills to stop producing the low-quality product effective May 1, but later pushed the deadline out to year-end.

Hebei Iron & Steel has about 12 million tonnes of annual rebar capacity.

"Before this, 40 percent of Hebei Steel’s capacity was used to produce grade II rebar," a company source in Tangshan said, noting that it will now produce HRB400E grade III rebar instead.
