SÃO PAULO Latin American
steelmakers produced 4.92 million tonnes of finished steel in
May, virtually even with a year earlier, according to data from
Latin American steel association Alacero.
Output in Brazil rose 4 percent to 2.29 million tonnes, but
this was largely offset by a 4-percent drop in Mexican
production to 1.34 million tonnes. Finished steel production
was up 12 percent in Argentina to 481,000 tonnes and 16 percent
in Venezuela to 236,000 tonnes.
Latin American steel production in the first five months of
this year totaled 23.02 million tonnes, down 1 percent from the
same period in 2012. Brazil produced 10.67 million tonnes
during the period, unchanged from a year earlier, while Mexico
reported a 2-percent drop to 6.55 million tonnes.
