SÃO PAULO Latin American steelmakers produced 4.92 million tonnes of finished steel in May, virtually even with a year earlier, according to data from Latin American steel association Alacero.
Output in Brazil rose 4 percent to 2.29 million tonnes, but this was largely offset by a 4-percent drop in Mexican production to 1.34 million tonnes. Finished steel production was up 12 percent in Argentina to 481,000 tonnes and 16 percent in Venezuela to 236,000 tonnes.
Latin American steel production in the first five months of this year totaled 23.02 million tonnes, down 1 percent from the same period in 2012. Brazil produced 10.67 million tonnes during the period, unchanged from a year earlier, while Mexico reported a 2-percent drop to 6.55 million tonnes.
