NEW YORK David Phelps, president of the American Institute for International Steel (AIIS), will retire Oct. 1.
Phelps, who has served at the Falls Church, Va.-based trade association for almost two decades, told AMM that a successor had not been named but a search committee is in place.
"Dave has been instrumental in promoting free and responsible trade and open markets over the past 17 years and more recently added to his responsibilities promoting critical pro-manufacturing issues, such as regulatory overreach, taxes and infrastructure initiatives for our nations port system," AIIS chairman John D. Foster said in a statement. "He also led the AIIS effort against the Section 201 steel restrictions, which were devastating to AIIS members."
Phelps joined AIIS as its executive director in 1996. He previously served at the American Iron and Steel Institute, where he worked on customs, transportation and public policy issues affecting the steel market. He also worked as an independent customs and steel products consultant.
