NEW YORK Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. has temporarily idled operations at its Wabush Scully Mine in Canada due to forest fires in the region.
"The company idled the mine due to the rapidly changing wildfire. The safety of its workers and their families is its main priority," Cliffs said June 28.
Cliffs will continue to monitor the situation, and the local management team in Wabush, Labrador, where the mine and processing plant are located, will determine when it is safe to resume operations.
Cliffs has been working with authorities in Wabush to provide volunteer assistance and earth-moving equipment to create a firebreak at a safe distance from the blaze.
The mine has the capacity to produce 5.6 million tonnes of hematite iron ore annually.
