LONDON Mexico imported 51,338 used vehicles from the United States in May, up 47.8 percent from the same month last year, according to Mexicos association of automobile distributors, Amda.
Imports of used vehicles in the first five months of the year totaled 258,983, up 49.9 percent from a year earlier, equivalent to 61.9 percent of new car sales in Mexico, Amda said. "If this trend continues, Mexico will import more than 600,000 units in 2013."
Despite the associations complaints, the Mexican Secretariat of Economy in January extended a decree that allows the import of used vehicles into the country until Jan. 31, 2014.
