US brass mill product imports decline, exports flat

NEW YORK — U.S. imports of brass mill products fell in May compared with the same month last year, while exports were virtually flat, according to the latest statistics from the Copper and Brass Fabricators Council.

Imports totaled nearly 44.67 million pounds in May, down 3.9 percent from more than 46.49 million pounds a year earlier, putting the year-to-date total at 200.65 million pounds, down 4.4 percent from 209.97 million pounds in the first five months of last year.

The biggest supplier in May was Germany at 9.61 million pounds, followed by South Korea (7.73 million pounds), Mexico (4.47 million pounds), China (4.42 million pounds) and Canada (3.85 million pounds).

U.S. exports of brass mill products totaled 22.26 million pounds in May, just 0.1 percent below 22.28 million pounds in May last year, but exports of 106.61 million pounds in the first five months of this year were up 3.2 percent from 103.28 million pounds in the same period last year.

Canada was the leading destination of U.S. material in May at 7.01 million pounds, followed by Mexico (6.77 million pounds), China (1.23 million pounds), South Korea (1.23 million pounds) and Saudi Arabia (909,032 pounds).
