PITTSBURGH — New metal recycler and processer G&M Recycling & Disposal Inc. could open in Streator, Ill., by the end of the month.

The city council will vote July 17 on whether to issue a special-use permit to G&M. The request has been recommended for approval by the planning commission.

Work is already under way so that the business can open as soon as possible, G&M co-owner Justin McCoy told AMM. McCoy’s partner is Jay Gebhardt, who has previously worked in the waste management industry.

McCoy decided to enter the scrap arena while doing demolition projects, he told AMM. “As I would tear down a building, I started moving water heaters and metals to the side and it hit me that I should be in the scrap business,” McCoy said.

The partners were able to purchase the assets of a shuttered scrap yard in the area. A 50-foot truck scale has also been purchased and will be installed at the site.

McCoy said he intends to sell his metals to one of Rockford, Ill.-based Behr Iron & Metal Co.’s auto shredding operations.
