CHICAGO — Accuride Corp. subsidiary Gunite Corp. has developed a lightweight fully cast brake drum as an alternative to lightweight steel-shell drums.

The high-strength Silver brake drum, produced at Gunite’s Rockford, Ill., plant, is designed to improve durability and performance at reduced weight. It uses engineered design enhancements and advanced metallurgy to achieve a 12.5-pound weight savings over standard full-cast drums.

Gunite engineers utilized a high-strength gray iron featuring improved mechanical and structural material characteristics to build the product, Accuride senior vice president of sales and marketing Chuck Byrnes said.

The company said it used the latest available casting technology and structural simulation analysis tools combined with high-strength gray iron to create an optimum mounting flange and wrap-around design that contributes to overall weight reduction without compromising design integrity.

"The new Gunite Silver will (allow) additional payload, better fuel economy and lower operating cost without sacrificing quality and dependability," Byrnes said.

The Silver weighs 99.5 pounds, about 11 percent less than comparable brake drums, reducing a truck-trailer combination’s total weight by around 100 pounds, he said.
