BHP’s manganese ore, alloys output up in June quarter

SHANGHAI, China — Global miner BHP Billiton Plc reported an increase in manganese ore and alloys production in the quarter ended June 30, 2013. Manganese ore output stood at 2.25 million tonnes, up 12 percent from the March quarter and 9 percent higher year on year.

Manganese ore production in the 2013 financial year ended June 30 rose 7 percent year on year to 8.517 million tonnes and reflected a substantial improvement in plant availability at its Gemco operation in Northern Territory, Australia, the company said.

Manganese alloy output in the June quarter was 182,000 tonnes, up 27 percent from the previous quarter and 143 percent higher year on year due to the production recovery of the miner’s Temco plant in Tasmania, Australia.

The miner produced 608,000 tonnes of manganese alloys during the 2013 financial year ended June 30, largely unchanged year on year as the recovery in production at Temco that followed the temporary suspension of operations in the prior period was offset by the permanent closure of energy-intensive silicomanganese production at South Africa’s Metalloys in January 2012.
