NEW YORK — Alcoa Inc. said it will lay off 70 employees at the company’s Alcoa Howmet plant in Hampton, Va.

"We have made the difficult decision to lay off 70 employees at the Alcoa plant in Hampton due to challenging market conditions," an Alcoa spokeswoman said in a statement. "We recognize how deeply this impacts our employees and we are working to support them through this transition process."

The Alcoa Howmet plant produces cast turbine airfoils for the industrial gas turbine industry and large superalloy and titanium aerospace structural components, according to the company’s website.

Employees at the plant are not unionized, according to a United Steelworkers spokeswoman.
