NEW YORK — TransCanada Corp. plans to spend Canadian $1.5 billion ($1.45 billion) to build a 189-mile large-diameter extension of its North Montney mainline in British Columbia.

"The ... project will provide substantial new capacity on the Nova Gas Transmission Ltd. (NGTL) system in response to the rapidly increasing development of natural gas resources in northeastern British Columbia," Karl Johannson, executive vice president and president, natural gas pipelines, said in a statement.
