LONDON ArcelorMittal SA is above target on iron ore shipments from its Liberia operations and expects to export 4.5 million tonnes this year, the global steelmaker said Aug. 15.
"We have already hit 3 million tonnes (between Jan. 1 and Aug. 8) and are not in (the fourth quarter) yet, so we are above our target," ArcelorMittal port manager Jim Page said. Earlier estimates put ArcelorMittals Liberia production at 4 million tonnes this year.
The company saw its July shipments nearly triple to 516,000 tonnes from 175,138 tonnes a year earlier, despite heavy rains.
Increased transshipments in dry months and measures to mitigate potential risks with high moisture content in iron oresuch as ArcelorMittals plans for a polymer-blending facility at Port Buchananare aiding ArcelorMittals export ramp-up, the company said.
The company is looking to increase shipments from its Yekepa Mine to 15 million tonnes per year by 2015 as part of a $1.5-billion expansion plan for its Liberian operations.
