NEW YORK Iron ore shipments on the Great Lakes totaled 6.4 million tonnes in July, up 7 percent from the previous month but down 8.2 percent from the same month last year, according to the Lake Carriers Association.
Shipments from U.S. ports totaled 5.7 million tons last month, down 5.2 percent from a year earlier. The July total included 490,000 tons shipped to Quebec City for loading into oceangoing vessels, putting the year-to-date export total at 1.55 million tons.
Shipments from Canadian ports totaled 775,000 tons in July, down 20.1 percent from a year ago.
Great Lakes iron ore trade totals 29.6 million tons so far this year, down 8.1 percent from the first seven months of last year and 4.1 percent below the long-term average for the first seven months of the year, the association said.
