NEW YORK Firefighters and employees at Sims Metal Management Ltd.s recycling facility in Jersey City, N.J., spent all night fighting a massive scrap fire that started at about 10 p.m. Aug. 19.
The fire started in a stockpile receiving area for the shredder at the companys Claremont Terminal facility, according to Sims. Firefighters used a fireboat on the Upper New York Harbor to help battle the blaze.
"The fire is contained, controlled and nearly extinguished. No injuries or property damage have been reported, and there is no danger to surrounding areas," a company spokesman told AMM in an e-mail Aug. 20. "Facility personnel have been working closely with the fire crews and assisting by removing material from the stockpile using heavy-duty cranes."
Facility operations were expected to resume Aug. 20, Sims added.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
