NEW YORK — The negotiating committee for United Steelworkers union Local 8782 at U.S. Steel Corp.’s Lake Erie Works has received a new offer from U.S. Steel as the lockout at the Nanticoke, Ontario, facility enters its 18th week.

The negotiating committee has returned from Pittsburgh with an offer to present to its membership, the union said on its website Aug. 23 .

Local 8782 said it will hold meetings to review the offer on Aug. 28, with a vote on the proposal scheduled to take place Aug. 30.

The union submitted a proposal to U.S. Steel through a government mediator earlier this month (amm.com, Aug 9 ) after previously rejecting the steelmaker’s most recent offer July 31 in a vote that saw 71 percent of the membership reject the proposal (amm.com, Aug 1).

The lockout, which began in late April, came as a result of failed negotiations over a three-year labor contract, affecting some 1,000 hourly workers at the plant (amm.com, April 29). The action and subsequent stalemate have been cited as one of several factors contributing to the current tightness in the steel sheet market (amm.com, Aug. 22).

Neither Local 8782 nor U.S. Steel could be reached for comment.
